AFTER THE TWO cops left their lieutenant’s office with very clear orders to go and interview Gloria Wagner right away, without any discussion—without one word—they both returned to the wide-open room around the corner from Juhle’s office that was the home of the homicide detail. Their desks faced one another hard up against one of the windows that looked down on Bryant Street, four floors below them.

Yamashiro picked up the phone at his desk and put in a call for a city-issued vehicle that they needed because he’d dropped his morning car off for an oil change. Waverly stood, impatient and smoldering, shifting his weight from foot to foot, until finally he shook his head and said, “Pit stop,” and walked away.

Fifteen minutes and still very few words later, Yamashiro pulled their new ride into an open bit of curb space in an alley a few blocks south of the Hall of Justice and turned off the engine.

“What’s here?” Waverly asked. “Why are we stopping?”

“Because we need to talk.”

“What about?”

“About how long we’re going to go on like this. Because I’m about done putting up with it.”

“With what?”

“See if you can guess, Eric. The attitude, the bullshit, the anger, all of the above. You pick one.”

Waverly sat facing forward in the passenger seat, arms folded across his chest. His eyes were on the alley in front of them. “So you think it’s me, huh?”

“I think you need to figure out what’s happening with you, yeah. I think you’ve got some post-traumatic stuff going on. It probably wouldn’t kill you to talk to a professional.”

“Yeah, ’cause it’s all me. It’s not you, having this PI come by over the weekend and dicking around with our cases, and you don’t even mention it to me. Were you ever going to bring that up on your own, or was that some special secret between you and Juhle?”

“Perfect example,” Yamashiro said. “Everything’s about you and your paranoia.”

“You’re saying that wasn’t anything? Talking to a PI and not telling your partner?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying, Eric. The guy was nothing. The discussion was nothing. I gave him nothing.”

“It didn’t sound like it. And funny how Juhle knew about it.”

“He didn’t just know about it, Eric. The guy is Juhle’s pal. He brought him around and introduced him. There was no threat.”

“Yeah, except it cut me out pretty well, didn’t it?”

“Dude. You weren’t at work. Remember? If you had been, you would have met the guy, too. But as I say, that’s a perfect example. You gotta talk to somebody. And while we’re at it, let me ask you one thing: Are you on something?”

“Fuck you.”

“Yeah, there’s a good answer.”

“I got pain pills that I’m taking. Prescribed.”

“Is that all?”

“What all do you want?”

“I want the truth.”

“The truth is, I’m on what the doctor ordered.”

“And nothing else?”

“I don’t have to answer that.”

“I think you just did. And while we’re at it, how’d you really hurt your hand? You slammed it in your car door? Really? How’d that
